Rumours & Ribbons is a competitive board game where you play as young individuals of leisure and means in a fictional version of early 19th-century England. You’ll spend your days seeking a place of prestige in society, searching for a beau worthy of the name, avoiding the gossip of your so-called “friends,” and enduring the judgment of the neighborhood’s most cynical aristocrats.
On your turn, you’ll visit different locations in the neighborhood and spend your dowry to purchase elegant outfits, gloves, ribbons, and fans—accessories that will enhance your appearance when the grand ball is held in search of beaus. You can also pursue academic disciplines to raise your cultural standing and make a better impression at social events. This resource-gathering mechanic forms the backbone of the game and allows you to build a long-term strategy toward victory.
After visiting a location and using all your available actions for the turn, it’s time for a bit of gossip! Exchange a card with another player, and if your card wins the comparison, your opponent must apply the effects of the card you gave them... which are unlikely to be beneficial, of course. This key mechanic drives interaction and raises the level of competition.
Two or three times per game, a high-society ball is held, and all players are invited to attend. At the ball, you dance, mingle, spread rumors, and may even leave with a potential partner—though men in this game are not guaranteed to stick around! They may be lured away by others or simply disappear as victims of a new gossip in town.
At the end of the game, the player who has earned the highest level of prestige and fulfilled the most conditions of their personal objective wins, while the others are left to stew in envy and disdain... at least until the next ball season begins!
