Terra de Castells (Land of Castles) is a strategic board game of ambition set in the borderlands of medieval Catalonia, where players compete to conquer castles and secure their legacy across the territory of the Spanish March.
In Terra de Castells, two to four players assume the roles of rival lords striving to expand their domains by controlling fortifications, managing resources, and forging alliances. The game blends area control, tactical planning, dice combat, and resource management into a dynamic experience where every decision shapes the political and military balance of the region. Accessible rules make the game easy to approach, while layered strategic options reward long-term planning and clever negotiation. Players must carefully choose where to put a meeple (that represents the “castlà”: the administrator of a castle and its domains), when to fortify and prepare for the war, and how to outmaneuver their opponents to dominate the map.
Each round, players gather influence resources related to the feudal estates: the Crown, the Clergy, the Nobility, and the Peasantry. Each one will be useful to deploy “castlans” and control more strongholds, fight to conquer another’s castle, unfold the feudal power, ask for the favour of the Crown, or collect taxes from peasants and nobles who owe vassalage to their lords. Actions alternate around the table: claiming territories, connecting castles, securing zones, and challenging rival strongholds. Strategic timing is crucial — expanding too quickly may leave you vulnerable, while playing defensively could cost you key opportunities. To prevail, you must balance growth, defense, and influence, ensuring that your castles stand as enduring symbols of your power. The game will start in the XI century and will last until the end of XV century or when a faction achieves the victory condition (what happens first). Each century (round) will trigger historical events that affect the gameplay of all players.
Terra de Castells includes a board representing different regions, combat dice, resource tokens, faction cards and unique favour cards that give advantage in many situations and enrich the interactions between factions, and a setup mechanic that provides variable starting scenarios from game to game. With only one victory condition but multiple paths to achieve it and high replayability, each session tells a new story of rivalry, ambition, and medieval grandeur.
